APL 8.0 Day 4 Roundup

Brocode FC were crowned APL 8.0 champions after an enthralling final against Shin City, which capped an action-packed final day.

Brocode came out on top courtesy of a long ball forward from captain Ahaan Krishnprasad, which was deflected past goalkeeper Rijul Ganju. The side had reached the semi-final after back-to-back penalty shootout victories against Ubermensch United and Dosai Dominators in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively. 

Their opponents, Shin City, had reached the final courtesy of their scintillating front three of Dhruv Damodar, Negash, and APL 8.0 MVP Angad Kanwar. Their run to the final saw them beat Lovsy FC 2-0 in the quarters and dismantle Pineapple FC 3-0 in the semis. 

The third-placed side was Golden Boot winner Bhavin Shivaa’s Ubermensch United, who got past Suiii Squad in the quarter-finals before falling to Brocode. The other semi-finalists were Pineapple FC, who defeated Sharpshooters in a mammoth shootout that saw multiple players take two penalties, before being opened up by Shin City. 

Other highlights from the day included Aashraya Adhikari’s heroic performance for Lovsy FC to keep Real Babble at bay while battling an injury in the Round of 16, and Atin Mittal’s for Dosai Dominators against Magic Moments to keep out for consecutive penalties in the shootout. 

The final day was also notable for the way it reflected a change in the successful strategy for APL teams. Shivaa was the only player sold for over 100M to score in the tournament, while Shin City’s Angad Kanwar was the most expensive player from the remaining three semi-finalists at 47M. 

Shin City proved to be the home of multiple award winners, with Angad Kanwar narrowly taking home the cis-men MVP award over Brocode’s Ahaan Krishnaprasad, and Rijul Ganju winning the Golden Glove. Dosai Dominators’ Aania Muthreja was the non-cis-men MVP for her outstanding performances, while Bhavin Shivaa of Ubermensch United won the Golden Boot award.
